First, the basics…
I grew up mostly in the Berkshires. But, my family lived everywhere. We lived in the Midwest; but, then came back to New Hampshire. I graduated from Keene State, where I studied political science. I thought I wanted to go in to law, and then quickly decided after my first class that I didn’t ever want to do law. [laughter] So, 31 years ago, I came to Boston. I probably have lived anywhere and everywhere in the Boston area, but I currently reside in Somerville. I have been here at FCLT for almost seven months.
What is FCLT – what do you do?
We are a think tank. We’re dedicated to encouraging long-term behaviors in business and investment decision-making.
What do you specifically do for FCLT?
Jack of all trades, master of none! [laughter] My official title is Executive Assistant and Office Manager, so mostly support Sarah. But also, the team – to understand logistically where they need to be and make sure they have everything they need. Mostly it’s Sarah, who travels extensively. I also take care of Human Resources. Everything is very new, and it’s exciting.
I’ve actually worked for Sarah before, at Wellington Management. In kind of a roundabout way, I lived in Europe for 3 years, and when I came back, I specifically applied to Wellington to temp. After my first 3 months, I was offered the opportunity to work in Global Relationship Management. So yes, Sarah was my first boss at Wellington and I worked for her for 5 years. Prior to here (FCLT), I took the summer off, and part of my list of what I wanted in my next job was to work for “Somebody like Sarah”. It’s a beautiful office, and a beautiful space, and I’ve never been in a shared space before, but it’s nice, I really like it.
What does a typical workday look like for you?
It can be a thousand different things, and it depends on the month. We’re amping up, because we’re trying to set up more working groups with companies, and we’re trying to set up more events with our members i.e. panels and things like that. The member company usually set these up, like today’s is at Schroders global in London, and they invite other members and investors.
Probably more of my typical day is organizing travel and making sure Sarah’s calendar is good for the next 3-6 months.
What is it that you enjoy about this shared space?
What isn’t there to like? It’s bright, it’s airy, it’s modern, and there are great people that we get to work with. Everyone is so nice and helpful all of the time. Which is refreshing, for sure. It’s hard to find someone that’s consistently always positive, and you guys are always consistently positive, even if you’re having a bad day, you would never know it.
Do you think that SnapSuites supports FCLT’s growth?
Most definitely. It’s amazing to know that I can reach out for your help at any time.
What advice would you give to future SnapSuites members?
Well, I’d encourage it. I’ve actually told a lot of people that I know (about SnapSuites). There was one gentleman that I knew that said he was looking for shared space, and I said “Now I have the space!” But, I would encourage it, I just like the concept.
What is the one thing in your office that you couldn’t live without?
My file drawer. I know it’s not crazy, but I couldn’t live without it. Organization is key, oh, and my label maker!
What is your favorite lunch spot in the neighborhood?
I just found out about Beantown Pho, and I love the Chicken soup they have over there. Atlantic Fish is huge, but Sarah really likes Porto. I haven’t been yet. I try to mostly bring my lunch.
What are some of your favorite things to do in the neighborhood after work?
I should be going to the gym, but I’ve been going straight home lately. If I stay around here (Back Bay), I mostly shop or try and do errands. Sometimes I’ll meet a girlfriend for dinner.
I am happiest when…
I think I am happiest when I know I’m caught up with my work, and it’s a Friday afternoon, and I can just relax a little bit and take a breather.
Anything else you’d like to add?
I really enjoy it here. The experience of working with you guys is amazing!
